The Best Outdoor Exercise Areas in New Orleans

New Orleans has a range of excellent outdoor spaces and places all around town where you can get your exercise routines rolling. From the endless (and endlessly awesome) City Park to passed-over pocket parks and backatown boulevards, here’s a look at New Orleans’ top spots for exercising outside.

Metairie Cemetery

Most people don’t associate resting places for the dead with great places to work out, but New Orleans’ elegant and expansive Metairie Cemetery is a surprisingly good place to get fit.

Full of wide open, private, pothole free boulevards, breathtakingly beautiful surroundings, and tranquil serenity, this massive space is a great place for slow and serene walks, running, jogging, and a variety of other equipment-free exercises.

The best part about working out at Metairie Cemetery is the almost guaranteed peacefulness that surrounds the grounds. Get there early in the morning for focused fitness in true NOLA style.

Lakeshore Drive

There’s just something about running along the Lake that’s so liberating and relaxing. Miles long Lakeshore Drive is the perfect outdoor spot to exercise in Orleans Parish. Jog along the road as you take in the beauty of the Lake and the enormous houses nearby.

It doesn’t end at just jogging. Take a breathtaking bike ride along one of New Orleans’ original outdoor oases, do burpees by the beach, or make your own marathon by running from West End to Gentilly.

Whatever you choose to do, the lakefront will soon be one of your most loved locations for exercising outside within city limits.

City Park

No examination of outdoor exercise in New Orleans can go without mentioning City Park. This pristine and colossal park is a one-of-a-kind outdoor exercise experience.

With so much wide open space and a variety of terrains to traverse, the workout possibilities within City Park are only as limited as your endurance and imagination.

Try hosting your own group fitness class with friends under the cover of the picturesque Peristyle located in the middle of the park. Partake in some aquatic exercise by paddling along beautiful Bayou St. John or Big Lake. Go traditional at some of the workout stations located near NOMA.

Looking for a challenge? Try running along the trails beginning on Marconi Blvd. before eventually making your way to the wild and untamed nature in the Couterie Forest. Complete the challenge by ending your exercise at New Orleans’ only mountain, doing sprints up and down the towering 52-foot behemoth!

The Best Outdoor Exercises You Can Do in New Orleans

Now that you’ve seen that our city can be such a spectacular place to get fit outside, let’s take a look at some of the best exercises you can do in your New Orleans outdoor workout besides the usual bike rides and long runs.

Bodyweight Park Workout

Designed by celebrity trainer and exercise expert George “Hit” Richards, this punishing park workout is a surefire way to quickly burn fat and build muscle without weights.

Here’s how to do it: Perform the exercises as a circuit, with little to no rest between exercises.

– Pull-ups 4×10, 20 seconds rest between sets
– Jump rope x 2 minutes
– Dips 4×12, 20 seconds rest between sets
– Mountain climbers 2×1 minute
– Pushups 3×1 minute

Explosive Pull-Ups

This exercise is great for working out your quads, triceps, back, and biceps.

Here’s how to do it: First, find a branch or horizontal pole that’s high above your head. Jump up high to reach it, exploding from the ground and thrusting up as you jump. Use your arms to pull your head above the pole or branch, then slowly ease yourself back down. Do as many as you can in one minute.

Burpees

Burpees are an excellent full body exercise that simultaneously does both strength training and aerobics all in one awesome (and exhausting!) exercise.

Here’s how to do it:

– Begin in a standing position.

– Move into a squat position with your hands on the ground.

– Kick your feet back into a plank position, while keeping your arms extended.

– Immediately return your feet into squat position.

– Stand up from the squat position.
